The Great Outdoors: A Childhood Necessity

As the weather cools down, it’s easy to find ourselves spending more time indoors, so here's four reasons to encourage you to prioritise outdoor time:

  • Physical Health: Nature encourages physical activity, helping kids develop strength, coordination, and fitness.

  • Mental Wellbeing: Time in nature has been proven to reduces stress, anxiety, and symptoms of attention deficit disorders.

  • Creativity: Unstructured outdoor play fosters creativity, imagination, and problem-solving skills.

  • Connection to the Environment: Nature experiences cultivate a sense  of responsibility and stewardship towards our natural environment.

Time spent in nature fosters creativity and encourages imaginative play, proving children with the space to explore and invent without limitations. In nature, children's imaginations run wild; they transform sticks into magic wands, and rocks into hidden treasures.

An additional bonus of instilling an early love for nature, is that it fosters environmental consciousness. Nature acts as a teacher, imparting valuable lessons about the environment. Kids who explore nature learn about the importance of taking care of our planet. These early lessons sow the seeds for future environmental consciousness.

Nature is also a place of respite. It offers an escape from the constant barrage of stimuli in our day to day lives. Children who spend time in nature benefit from reduced stress, improved focus, and enhanced mental wellbeing. Being in nature challenges them, building resilience and problem-solving skills as they navigate uneven terrain, weather changes, and unexpected encounters.

Nature is an amazing classroom, playground, and sanctuary for children. As parents, educators, and guardians, it is our responsibility to ensure that kids have the opportunity to connect with the natural world. By doing so, we lay the groundwork for a brighter future for both them and the planet they will inherit. So let’s make a conscious effort to prioritise spending more time in The Great Outdoors!
