Simple Steps to Tomato Success

Spring is here and it’s time to plant tomatoes for summer salads, sandwiches and snacking! Below are Aunty Miri’s juiciest tips to ensure your tomato-growing venture flourishes:

Varied Varieties

First, select a tomato variety that aligns with your culinary aspirations. Ask the staff at your local garden centre about what’s on offer. Aunty Miri’s top recommendation is the classic cherry tomato variety, Sweet 100.

Sunlit Sanctuary

Choose a sheltered, sunny spot and prepare your soil or pot with organic matter such as compost and sheep pellets.

Hello Hydration

Water your tomato plants deeply and regularly. To reduce the chance of blight, water the roots only and keep the plant foliage dry. This is easier said than done when the mini humans have the hose!

Natural Nutrients

Feed your tomato plants with a natural liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks to replenish the nutrients in the soil. Aunty Miri always has Tui Naturals Liquid Seaweed on hand.

Steadfast Support

As your tomato plants grow and begin to fruit, you'll need to provide them with support. Gently stake the growing vines to ensure they remain upright and have good airflow.
